Milan design fair

On the occasion of the Salone del Mobile (April 12-17) this week, Disney has put together a show of rooms inspired by its film TRON: Legacy.

Design companies including Studio Ito Design, LagoStudio, and AquiliAlberg have contributed creations, all of which were made using DuPont’s Corian solid surface, to outfit a ‘safe house’ inspired by movie character Kevin Flynn’s virtual home.

The project – which will be on display at Padiglione Visconti (via Tortona 58, Milano, in the Zona Tortona area) – features a bathroom with a tube mirror, a bedroom with a free-standing tree, and a futuristic home theater inspired by Flynn’s Arcade.

All rooms recreate the characteristic Tron feeling thanks to geometric forms and backlit elements.

There were 4,433 product submissions from 60 countries from which the jury selected 650 winners, 50 of which were given the ‘best of the best’ distinction. This is the fifth ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ award that Ligne Roset has received since 2005, which is an amazing feat! They put a lot of research into its creation, from the stretchy covering fabric and flexible foam material to its ample dimensions, making Ploum remarkable in terms of both style and comfort.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, designers of this award-winning sofa, collaborate with Ligne Roset and other manufacturers, while also working on architectural projects. Ladurée is a luxury cakes and pastries brand based in Paris, France. It is known as the inventor of the double-decker macaron, fifteen thousand of which are sold every day. They are still one of the best known makers of macarons in the world.

The history of Parisian tea salons is intimately tied to the history of the Ladurée family.

It all began in 1862, when Louis Ernest Ladurée, a miller from France’s southwest, created a bakery at 16 rue Royale in Paris.

During the same year, the first stone of the Garnier Opera was laid, and the area surrounding the Madeleine was rapidly developing into one of the capital’s most important and elegant business districts. The most prestigious names in French luxury goods had already taken up residence in this neighborhood.

In 1871, while Baron Haussmann was giving Paris a ‘‘new face’’, a fire made access to the transformation of the bakery to a pastry shop.

The decoration of the pastry shop was entrusted to Jules Cheret, a famous turn-of-the-century painter and poster artist. M Cheret sought inspiration from the painting techniques used for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the Garnier Opera.

By incorporating them in his work, he added depth and relief to the ceilings ornamented with cherubic children.

British car maker Aston Martin is looking to leverage its luxury brand into the world of consumer electronics by teaming up with Canadian mobile phone manufacturer Mobiado to produce a line of high-end handsets to be launched in May of this year. Until then, the company has provided a tantalizing peek at possible future designs with the CPT002 Aston Martin Concept Phone that takes the ‘slab of glass’ design of many current smartphones to the next level. With a solid sapphire crystal capacitive touchscreen, the CPT002 is completely transparent.

To allow the screen of the CPT002 to be transparent, Mobiado has incorporated the battery, electronics and SIM card into the sides of the device, which are crafted from platinum. The only things blocking the view when looking through the phone when it’s in standby are the Aston Martin and Mobiado logos, what appear to be battery and signal strength indicators along the top and a series of dots along the bottom that appear similar to the dots on the iPhone that let you know which screen you’re on – although it’s not ‘clear’ whether that’s actually what they are.

A transparent touchscreen has already popped up on LG’s GD900 mobile phone, but only in the form of a touchpad that displays the phone’s number pad. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait a bit longer for a phone with a transparent full touchscreen display with Mobiado’s upcoming range not sporting a phone with such a design. However, other features of the CPT002 Concept Phone that are designed to integrate with an Aston Martin vehicle are more of a possibility.
